Greetings, all,
Summer is flying by, and with just weeks to go before the fall semester begins, I wanted to send a quick update.
CAMPUS RENOVATIONS
* Progress continues well on both Bentley Hall and the Visual Arts Center. Bentley work is right on schedule and will be opening soon! Construction will continue at VAC through the fall semester.
* The walkway up College Hill from McClelland to Martinetti has been regraded so it’s not so steep by Martinetti, which will make it easier for all of us to trek up and down the hill.
* Thanks to our Physical Plant staff for all the campus-beautification work this summer – which will include brand new banners on our campus poles next week!
NEW HIRES
While we will have a chance closer to the start of the academic year to meet them in person, please join me in welcoming our four newest employees:
* Jamey Ventura, our new athletics director, started July 5. He brings more than seven years of combined experience as athletics director and women’s soccer coach at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., and Green Mountain College here in Vermont. At both institutions, Jamey grew the athletics programs and significantly increased the student-athlete retention rate. He also led several successful community-outreach programs with student-athletes while at Wells.
* Sue Ordinetz Ph.D. is our new learning specialist, based in the Office of Academic Support Services. Sue has extensive experience in teaching and advising students with learning disabilities, and her doctoral work in post-secondary and adult education focused on student-centered learning and supports. She also is an occupational therapist. Sue comes to us from American International College in Springfield, Mass.
* Gregory Petrics Ph.D. joins us as assistant professor of mathematics. Greg recently earned his doctorate in mathematics from Dartmouth College, where he has served as mathematics instructor—as well as full time doctoral student—since fall 2008. He holds a B.A. in mathematics and teacher education from Middlebury College.
* Lauren Philie will start August 29 as our associate director of alumni relations. Lauren leaves her position as development director of River Arts in Morrisville, which she has held for the last four years. She is a Johnson resident with a B.A. in human services and experience in event planning, program development, fundraising and grant-writing.
FACULTY/STAFF PICNIC: THURSDAY, AUG. 11
Mark your calendars and please join us on the quad starting at noon. This is a great way to reconnect after the summer, meet the newest members of our community, and partake in some fun and games. Food will be provided by the good folks at Aramark.
WANT A GROCERY STORE BACK IN JOHNSON?
With the Grand Union now closed, grocery options for JSC students and Johnson residents are few and far between. Now the Lamoille River Food Center (LRFC) is looking to bring a community grocery store to the former Grand Union space! The Center needs 1,000 signatures from individuals and families who are interested in potentially becoming members of this proposed “Community Cooperative Market.” Carolyn D’Luz (Academic Support Services) is helping to gather signatures, which are a sign of interest, not a commitment. If you’d like to add your signature, please email Carolyndluz@gmail.com with your full name, address and email address.
BEST WISHES TO ALL for the remainder of the summer! I hope to see many of you at the JSC picnic.
