July 8, 2009

The Campus continues to be a busy place through June, July and August; but, it’s a different kind of busy as we host summer camps and conferences, prepare for new and returning students, make some significant improvements to our campus and, for some faculty and students, conduct summer research projects.

Environmental Sciences Research: faculty and students together

Four faculty members are working on research projects associated with the local watershed these projects encompass the broad spectrum of the environmental and health sciences.

  • Dr. Les Kanat and two students are investigating Deer Brook landslide in Jeffersonville.
  • Dr. Tania Bacchus is supervising the research of two students who are conducting a biological and chemical assessment of the Lower Pond on the JSC campus.
  • Dr. Bob Genter is continuing his VT EPSCoR-funded study of investigating sources of total phosphorus and E. coli from three land uses in the Lamoille River drainage basin.
  • Three undergraduate students are participating on the project. Dr. Liz Dolci is beginning an investigation of microbial communities of an environmentally impacted waterway at the Lowell/Eden asbestos mine.

Health Sciences

Dr. Hans Haverkamp continues his research on asthma and exercise, working with two JSC summer interns.

Human Resources and College Communications

Human Resources functions are now being managed through the Dean of Administration’s office.  Susan Rothschild and Sharron Scott are the people to go to with HR questions and concerns.  Nancy Hutchins continues to ably manage payroll and benefits.

We have reorganized the Communications, Alumni and Development and Admissions areas  and no longer have a Dean of Institutional Advancement. Development and Alumni Relations are reporting to me, as is Admissions.  We have posted for a Director of College Communications and have received a very good response.  I have put a search team in place and Melissa Weinstein is heading it up.  We are hoping to have the new person in place for early Fall.

Two New Staff….

Have joined our Physical Plant crew.  Jarrod Irwin will begin next week as a Maintenance Technician II and Joanne Shaw will join our custodial staff.  Please welcome them when you see them around campus.

SHAPE upgrades are progressing!

So far, we have outdoor stairs being rebuilt and the first and second floor framed and sheet rocking underway. The new SHAPE will feature an elevator—an addition that will make the building accessible to individuals with mobility impairment.  We will have a new first-floor fitness center with cardio exercise and physical conditioning space.  The second floor will house a new exercise physiology lab, a spinning studio, an exercise space for low-impact activities (think yoga, tai chi, etc.), new offices for Athletics staff, a function room for varsity athletes and friends, and a small meeting space.

The varsity gym will have new bleachers, and a new floor.  Reclaimed pieces of the ‘old’ bleachers will be accent pieces on our new reception area and will be incorporated as features throughout the building.  Our hope is to have the first floor of the building done by the third week in September with part of the multi-gym open when students return.  The second floor is anticipated for the end of September and the Varsity Gym before October 15.  Motion-sensitive lighting will mean a considerable savings in use of power.  Hard hat tours could start as early as the end of the month!

Welcome Home Andrew Parker

Andrew is a Hyde Park resident who met with a devastating roadside accident in Afghanistan while serving as a U.S. Army Cavalry Scout. After months of rehabilitation, Andrew came home to a grand welcome and an amazing show of community support including a full renovation of an accessible apartment for him in his family home. Penny Howrigan, Associate Dean of Enrollment, represented JSC at the welcome home ceremony and presented a scholarship, should Johnson State College be in Andrew’s future plans.
